Senior Capstone/Thesis
Globalization and Football: How British Hegemony Enabled the English Premier League to Become the World’s Foremost Domestic Football League
My senior capstone/thesis for the Global Studies major at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is probably my proudest work thus far. It was certainly the most difficult, entailing a critical analysis of a global issue over the course of nearly 25 pages with at least 20 references to other works. I chose to write about the relationship between globalization and the English Premier League, or more specifically how British hegemony in political, economic, and cultural terms ensures that the Premier League remains the world's foremost domestic football league. In order to find evidence to support my argument, I conducted extensive research regarding historical trends of British hegemony (e.g., imperialism), contemporary trends (e.g., British popular culture), as well as migration patterns to the U.K. and the extent of discrimination that migrants to the U.K. frequently experience. This work took a great deal of effort, but I am incredibly pleased with how it turned out. The fact that I got 97.5% as a final mark was rewarding enough, but I am even happier about the work itself; it was truly a pleasure to synthesize what I had learned in the Global Studies major with my own personal interests through writing.
